Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the break. It has been fun to see everyones faces and hear about their time off, I sure did miss all my "littles" (students).
Since our last update lots has been happening.... We have continued to have visits with our friends at Crime Not to Read, some of us even helping to read the stories! We took our knowledge of simple machines and made catapults, balloon powered cars, and an elevator. We even used real screwdrivers and tools and made some cheesy "edible screws". From simple machines we moved onto Light and Shadow, which ended with the students taking what they learned to create a shadow play retelling the story of Rainbow Crow. We honoured our Veterans in November and learned about the importance of remembering the past, and why we wear poppies. The Grade 4's were responsible for the Remembrance Day assembly and some of our students did an amazing job working with Colonel Walker students to MC the event. Not to mention the lovely silhouette art work we completed in class in honour of what we had learned. (Which also tied in our science unit of light and shadow!). Elder Kerri was also present to share with us. We were getting better at multiplication, using strategies like skip counting, drawing equal groups and arrays, and learning special multiplication tricks to help us begin to memorize our facts. (Playing "Around the world" during math has proven to be a fun practice game".) We also did a lot of graphing and looking at various patterns and relations. Our class was one of the lucky ones who got to go celebrate the Grey Cup down at Stampede Park! Not only did we learn about the Grey Cup but students went down a giant slide, through an obstacle course and had a yummy pancake breakfast! December was of course a busy time with practicing for the Winter Solstice concert. My class of "chipmunks" did a great job at learning our song in both English and Cree! I was very proud of them and glad to see all the family that attended! It was a fun day! We got to talk with our "classroom champion", hockey player Brigette Lacquette. The fun and learning continued with Christmas themed activities, art, pajamma/messy hair day, and gingerbread house making! With the best part being Santa and Elsa coming to visit us! That brings us to January! We started this first week back by setting goals and talking about resolutions. We have each made a S.M.A.R.T. goal for home and for school. (Well, we actually started by playing winter break bingo and using each others backs as desks, but it was a fun way to find out and talk about what everyone did over the break!) A look ahead: Social Studies- We we will start by working on mapping skills and learning all about Alberta's regions, landmarks and landforms. Students will be researching important natural landmarks in Blackfoot Territory. Math- We are going to be talking what we know about multiplication and connecting it to division. But before that we may review place value. Literacy- This week has been all about summarizing and distinguishing Fact vs Opinion! They're getting very good at both. We will continue to work on reading words with long vowel sounds. There's also going to be dictionary races! More focus on spelling annnnnnd learning handwriting! In the coming months there will be round dances, students celebration of learning, and some exciting field trips to look forward to!

After what was hopefully a nice, relaxing, long (but not long enough, hehe) summer break it was nice to come back to school and see all of our old friends and meet some new ones! We have welcomed many new faces to our school this year, both students and staff. The first week of school was spent sharing about our summers and getting to know everyone in our class.
September was busy with visitors, assemblies and field trips! Oh my! We had our first visit from Crime Not to Read. Our class was able to go Sage picking at Nose Hill (its a big job gathering sage for the entire school!), and we had tons of fun at our school wide field trip to Granary Road. We learned about Treaty 7, and had our Orange Shirt Day Assembly reminding ourselves that Every Child Matters! We also remembered Terry Fox by taking part in our own Terry Fox Run. Oh! and we tried our hand at curling with Rocks and Rings. As we go into October we are looking forward to Thanksgiving, Halloween and doing more with our new Health/Self regulation program called S.N.A.P. (Stop Now and Plan)...a program which has us learning from each other as we act out and role play various situations that may challenge our emotions/thoughts. In literacy we are working on ABC order, Parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs), and writing spoooooooky stories (also identifying parts of a story). In Math we are skip counting up a storm! Ask your kids to sing one of our songs. We are starting to see how if you can skip count, you can multiply! Science has exploring the Scientific Method, Force and Motion and soon we will be learning about Simple Machines! |
